Utilising an Attic Room

If you are looking to expand the rooms in your home then there may be a way to utilise some additional space by transforming your empty attic areas into functional rooms that will be spacious and stylish. Attic conversions can be a much cheaper alternative to an extension and can often create a much bigger space than you may first imagine. We have come up with the 5 best uses for an attic space that can be achieved with a little imagination and a variety of budgets.

Bedrooms

The obvious choice for utilising an attic space is the need for an additional bedroom. Whether it’s for your children or visiting guests this area provides ample space for a small single or double bed as well as storage and display areas. Position your bed centrally against the main triangular wall of the room and use this as a feature wall with a coloured paint or wallpaper whilst keeping the remainder of the room neutral to give the illusion of more space. You can leave the roof beams exposed for a cottage style design or enclose them for a more sleek and contemporary finish. Include some built in wardrobes to utilise every inch of space and add some coloured or patterned blinds to the Velux windows for a stylish and co-ordinated finish.

Bathrooms

If you are a home with only one family bathroom, as your children grow or you have friends and family to stay you may find that a queue begins to form for the toilet or shower facilities. You can solve this problem by creating an additional large bathroom in your attic area or even include an en-suite bathroom in your attic bedroom for a private space for guests or growing teenagers. To make maximum use of the limited space then select a compact bath that will fit in the smaller alcove spaces of the attic or a fitted walk in shower area that can be inserted neatly beneath the slant of the ceiling. Include built in sink and toilet units as well as a wall mounted heated towel rail for a multifunctional addition to the room.

Cinema Room

If you love nothing more than kicking back and relaxing with your favourite film then why not create your very own movie room in your attic area where you can enjoy a private cinema style experience without disturbing the rest of the house. Place a large widescreen TV or a projector screen on the largest wall in the attic space and then add some luxury leather armchairs, sofas or beanbags in the perfect position to view the screens. Add a small mini fridge for an ice cold beer or soft drink and you could even include a popcorn machine for an authentic cinema experience. Where possible include a surround sound system with freestanding or wall mounted speakers for high quality sound that is perfect for watching action movies or horror films.

Study/Office

Whether you are a student looking for some private study space or someone who works from home and needs some peace and quiet, why not use your attic space to create the perfect home study area. Positioned at the top of the house you can create a personal hideaway and a contained area for all of your work or study accessories. Position a desk in the lightest part of the attic, preferably beneath a widow to give yourself optimum light in which to work. Include a computer or laptop for online work as well as plentiful storage space for your files, folder, paperwork and stationary. Add a relaxing armchair or beanbag for some reading or revision and ensure that you have plenty of ceiling spotlights or lamps for any late night paperwork or homework.

Dressing room

Sometimes it can be difficult to fit all the storage we need into a single bedroom area particularly if you are sharing your bedroom with your partner. Bedroom areas can often look overcrowded with wardrobes cupboards and tables leaving very little space for your actual bed.  Why not create a separate room in your attic space that is reserved simply for your clothes and beauty accessories where you can spend all the time you need trying on outfits or preparing for a night out. Include some large fitted wardrobes with floor to ceiling mirrored doors that will not only create an illusion of space but provide you with an area in which to admire your clothes. Add in a dressing table with a mirror, some built in drawer and shelving areas for your smaller items, shoes and accessories and you have created a dressing room area that is sure to be the envy of all your friends.
