Homes in Bloom

One of my favourite parts of summer is seeing the beautiful gardens and meadows filled with elegant flowers in a wide range of colours. This season the interior design world has gone crazy for floral home decor and accessories that will create a home in bloom, full of gorgeous colour and striking print. From classic English garden designs to more vibrant and exotic prints and patterns, you are sure to find some floral fair to suit your tastes.

Floral upholstery never goes out of fashion; its timeless style makes it a perfect option for both modern and traditional home interiors. For a simple yet striking focal point in a living room or bedroom then select a simple occasional chair and upholster in a rose, hydrangea or poppy print fabric in dusky pastel tones. If you wish to create a more modern look then opt for bold tropical print upholstery or abstract watercolour floral prints that will create a striking focal point in a neutral interior space. Shabby chic homes would not be complete without a dash of floral upholstery, opt for Kath Kidston floral fabrics and upholster some simple oak or painted dining chairs for a feminine vintage style.

Wallpapers and wall murals are a great way of adding a floral pattern into your chosen room and come in a vast array of designs to suit your home. If you wish to create a real visual statement then select a large floral, photographic mural such as a single rose, daisy or wildflower meadow and place on your main feature wall. For a softer and more subtle approach then select small floral print wallpapers that have a classic vintage vibe and place on a main wall or alcove space to highlight the dimensions of your room. If bold and bright patterns are just up your street then select vibrant tropical colour tones and eye-catching orchid, palm and hibiscus print wallpapers that will look great in a Caribbean or beach inspired home interior.

Floral bedding, cushions and curtains are a simple and cost effective way of introducing this pattern into your current home interior. You can co-ordinate your soft furnishings for a classic look and feel or include a mix and match of prints for a more striking visual style. Classic wildflower or rose print items will create a quintessential English garden look that works well in traditional or cottage home interiors. For a more modern appearance opt for abstract or watercolour print patterns in navy, yellow, red and green that will create an eye-catching finish in a minimal interior space.

Ceramics and china are perfect for adding a floral pattern to your home decor and create a soft and feminine feel in any interior space.  For a classic and elegant appearance then fill a solid oak or painted dresser with a variety of traditional pottery and ceramics in rose inspired floral prints. Opt for pastel tones or traditional red, white and blue for a splash of visual colour and detail. If you have some plain shelving or a windowsill area then make the most of the space with a display of floral print vases filled with your favourite blooms in co-ordinating colours. A summer dining table can be accentuated with a large floral and foliage patterned table cloth and fill a classic milk jug with a selection of wild flowers to create an elegant and feminine centrepiece.

Furniture up-cycling is still as popular as ever and is a great way of giving a new lease of life to your current furniture items. A simple chest of drawers, wardrobe or bedside can be updated with a few thin coats of chalk paint in classic white or pastel hues. Drawer fronts can be given a stylish appearance using a range of floral wallpaper and sealed with gloss for a professional finish. Add some glamour to drawer and door fronts with some crystal pumpkin handles that will create a feminine ambiance in your chosen room. For a vintage inspired interior look then use the same paint effect on a coffee or dining table and decoupage the table tops with single layers of printed paper napkins in your chosen floral design. Seal with varnish or add a crackle glaze for an antique look and finish.
