Going Bare Interior Design

This season the interior design world is GOING BARE with simple neutral colour schemes and light and cosy decor that is perfect for both modern and traditional homes. This look takes inspiration from Scandinavian interior design to create a room that perfectly combines simplicity and style.

Neutral colour schemes are key in creating this look, with colours that keep the room light and open whilst still maintaining a sense of depth and cosiness. Opt for soft cream and beige tones and team with warming hazelnut, peach, taupe and mocha for a sophisticated interior finish. For a more Nordic look then select off white tones that can be partnered with soft dove grey and pewter for a bright and inviting feel within the room. If you are looking to add some subtle detail to your walls then opt for exposed stone, natural wood panelling or a marble or leaf print wallpaper in co-ordinating neutral colours.

Soft furnishing will create the cosiness that is required for this look while providing a soft and subtle area of colour within your chosen space. Opt for simple cotton fabrics for a clean and simple look or more textural velvets and chenille for added warmth. Select cushions in plain colours that sit along with the same colour palette such as beige and caramel, peach and pink or grey and white for a chic and sophisticated finish. These can be paired with neutral faux fur throws and cushions or tree print, tie-dye or simple striped patterns for added detail.

Upholster chairs, sofas and stools with neutral or warm-coloured fabrics that will create an inviting ambience that is minimal and elegant. For a modern home then why not select some cream, beige or caramel coloured leather that will look great on a contemporary or retro sofa. If you prefer a more traditional look then tan leather will give a sophisticated feel to a chesterfield style armchair or add some soft peach or cream velvet fabric to a French carved armchair for a chic and glamorous finish. For a more Nordic-inspired design opt for whitewashed wooden stools or dining chairs and upholster with some clean and crisp white and grey cotton fabric for a minimal and sleek interior finish.

Opt for natural or light coloured furniture items that will compliment your chosen colour scheme. Crisp painted white furniture or high gloss furniture will complement any chosen colour palette and will create a sense of space and light in smaller rooms of the home. For a more natural look then opt for light golden oak furniture for a cosy feel or weathered and whitewashed furniture items for a ‘bare’ look that is light and fresh.

Grey painted furniture will also look great in Nordic-inspired rooms and can be mixed and matched with other designs for a more quirky designer finish. Accessorise the room with simple accessories such as vases with ornate twigs and fairy lights, clay pots and planters and natural wooden ornaments, frames and lighting that will create a subtle focal point displayed along a mantelpiece, oak sideboard or bedside.
