Furniture Art Interior Design

Think of your favourite art gallery, museum or modern office block and take a look at how furniture can be integrated into the artistic theme of the room. More and more interior designers are choosing to use furniture as artwork to create areas of visual detail, shape and colour within the home.

Tables are a great way of using furniture as art in your chosen room. These versatile furniture items can come in a versatile variety of shapes, designs and colours and perfectly marry style and practicality. Carved wooden tables can be used to add a splash of traditional warmth and modern design into the room. Dark walnut and oak dining tables give a sophisticated finish and can be carved into fluid, curvaceous designs for a sculptural look or chunky straight edged geometric shapes for a more bold and rugged finish. Glass and mirrored materials also work great in creating tables that are invisible yet visually striking. Opt for interlocking cube designs for a modern faceted look or fluid bridge style designs for a contemporary minimal feel.

Patterns and colour play a huge role in creating character in your chosen interior space and while it is the logical choice to opt for wallpaper, carpets or curtains to display your chosen prints, why not create an art inspired furniture item that can take centre stage within the room. Take a statement item such as a wardrobe, oak sideboard or chest of drawers and use the exterior to create a masterpiece that co-ordinates or contrasts with the rest of the room. If you are something of a Picasso then use your freehand paint skills to create a reproduction of your favourite artwork or pattern on the doors and drawer fronts of your item. If you’re not overly artistic then you can achieve a similar look by opting for bold and artistic wallpapers that can be used to decoupage your chosen piece.

Upholstery is always a great way of introducing colour and print into your home and with this trend, the bolder and more striking, the better! If you have a minimal or monochrome space then why not opt for abstract and bright upholstery featuring a graffiti style fabric or if you are arty then select a linen canvas material that you can use to create your own artwork with some fabric paints or pens. Striking portraits or flowers will look great hand painted onto stools or oak dining chairs for a unique one of a kind design. Upholstered footstools, headboards and dressing table stools are also a great way of creating a focal point in the room with some creative and distinctive patterns and designs.

Sculptural seating is set to be another big trend for 2017 and this is perfect for creating a visual centrepiece in your living room, dining room, office or bedroom. For a modern design with a hint of classic elegance, select some acrylic chairs that feature filigree style carved seats and back rests featuring tree and leaf designs. For a sleeker minimal feel then opt for clear Perspex or coloured acrylic seating that will create a bold 1980s style feel in your dining room interior. Egg chairs, teardrop shaped sofas and cantilever style armchairs will also provide a statement focal point in the centre or corner of the room.
