Escapist Interiors

In these modern times it seems that our world revolves around some form of technology or another. We are strapped to a computer or laptop at work, our smart phones never leave our side and we can’t wait to get home so we can tune in to our favourite TV shows on the newest model of TV. While these items have their benefits and help us with many tasks throughout our day it can be argued that they are decreasing our social skills and removing us from the far simpler and purer aspects of everyday life.

This year why not create your very own ESCAPIST interior that dedicates a single room or even a small space within your home to a haven free from all things technological. This small and functional getaway will allow you and your family to take time out from social media, streaming sites and spreadsheets and enjoy the peace and quiet of an electronic free life.
If your living room is the main centre of socialising in your home (as most people’s are) then try and contain as many electrical items as possible in that one area to free up another room for your relaxation and technology free space. Alternatively if you have the extra rooms in your home then why not create a movie or music room in which to enjoy watching TV or playing your music, keeping your living room as a social space in which to talk and interact with your family members and visitors. Instead of using the TV as the focal point in the room arrange your seating area around a central fireplace, artwork or window to give the eye something to look at in the absence of a TV.
If you are a lover of books, why not create a snug reading room where you can escape into a different world within the pages of your favourite novel or comic. Use floor to ceiling bookshelves and storage areas to contain your collections and create zoned areas of lighting with spotlights or a floor and table lamp for added function and style. Alternatively create a room in which you can enjoy your favourite hobby, or take up a new one! Perhaps create a knitting room and try your hand at making a cosy scarf or jumper for the cold winter months or an art room where you can try your hand at some painting, sketching or sculpting. Opt for rooms with calming and refined colour schemes that will create a relaxed mood in your chosen space.
If you have children then the prospect of a technology free room may seem like an impossible task but there are lots of other ways in which you can keep your children entertained (after all, they managed it before all this current technology came about!). Create a fun and funky family room with lots of comfy seating such as armchairs and beanbags and a large circular dining table where you can enjoy a game of Monopoly, Cluedo or Trivial Pursuit. Where possible ask your family members to place their mobile phones in a drawer or basket when they get home and try and enjoy at least an hour a day without the need to look at your social media pages or check your emails.
