How to Create a Cinderella Interior

She is the Princess that all girls dreamed of being as a child (and maybe even now as an adult) and her story is possibly the most recognisable and cherished of all fairy tales. This week we are looking at the fabulous tale of CINDERELLA and how you can create a fabulous home interior that is inspired by this famous Disney film. The rags to riches idea is still a popular theme in modern day movies and the magical elements of a fairy godmother, a pumpkin carriage and of course the handsome prince provides plentiful inspiration for transforming your interior spaces.

Cinderella is a dreamer, she dreams of a life outside of the servitude that she endures from her stepmother and ugly sisters and in the film the famous song ‘ A dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes’ is one of the most recognisable Disney ditties. This inspirational song quote makes a fabulous basis for a wide variety of home accessories such as cushions, mugs and bedding and I particularly love this shabby chic style plaque (left) that pays homage to the colour of Cinderella’s ball gown when her wish is finally granted.

You can also include the most iconic image of Cinderella’s castle which is the symbol for all Disney movies and makes a fabulous wall sticker in a children’s bedroom or an ornament or picture in a living room or dining room area.

We all wish we could have a fairy godmother at some stage in our lives and when Cinderella meets hers, she is granted her wish to attend the ball in fabulous magical fashion. Of course the one element of the story we all remember is the turning of a pumpkin into a glorious and glamorous carriage. This is the perfect time of year to decorate your home with pumpkins as they are fully in season and are readily available due to the upcoming Halloween festivities. For a sophisticated and magical feel then select miniature pumpkins and paint them in soft white, grey or duck egg blue.

Place the pumpkins in glass cloche domes and decorate with fairy lights, silver twigs and glitter for a unique and elegant focal point on a sideboard or table. You can also create a magical centrepiece in your bedroom space with a fabulous carriage inspired bed frame (right) that features intricate metal detailing and a four post formation that curves gracefully into a pumpkin shape above the bed.

All wishes have their limits and while Cinderella is given her wish to attend the ball she must leave before the clock strikes midnight as this is when her fairy godmother’s magic will become undone. The magnificent clock in the ballroom stands as a reminder to Cinderella that she must keep track of time (even if she does get somewhat distracted by the handsome prince) and clocks are a great way of creating a focal point within your home interior. If you have limited space then opt for period style mantle clocks that can also be displayed on a bedside or side table or if you wish to make a real statement then invest in a large and eye-catching wall clock or clock inspired painting (left) that can be placed on a feature wall or at the top of the stair case for an additional nod to the film. Select plain black clocks against a neutral backdrop or opt for feminine cream and pastel blue to pay homage to Cinderella’s dress.

Of course no Cinderella inspired home would be complete without the famous glass slipper that gets left behind when she flees the ball at midnight. Without this item, the prince would never be able to find her and she would never have got her ‘Happy Ever After’. I absolutely love this glass slipper cushion (right) that features a silhouette of Cinderella against the heel of the shoe. This fabulous cushion can be partnered with other designs that are inspired by the story such as carriages, mice, magic wands and clocks or paired with simple silver or blue metallic or glittery cushions for added magical detail.

You can also use actual glass, or crystal slippers as accessories around your chosen room as their delicate transparency can be paired with a wide range of interior decors and styles. Display on a side table beneath a lamp where they can capture the light or in a display cabinet with built in lighting to showcase their sparkle and elegance.
