How to Create a Turkish style Home Interior

The recent spell of warm and sunny weather has definitely brought a smile to many of our faces. So what better time to capture that bright and uplifting feeling and create a mixture of Eastern and Mediterranean influences with a stylish Turkish inspired home interior.

With a rich blend of colours, fabrics and shapes, Turkish interior design will provide a splash of luxury and elegance to any room of the home.

If you are planning a change of kitchen or bathroom then this is the perfect chance to embrace the bold and colourful nature of Eastern interiors with a selection of vibrant and patterned Turkish tiles. Featuring a strong array of Moroccan influences, Turkish tiling showcase a selection of geometric shapes and floral designs and are often used to create striking, arch shaped motifs and murals on a feature wall or as a backsplash to a kitchen worktop. Blue is the most popular colour choice and is partnered with crisp white, gold or bold purples and reds for a distinctive look that is perfect for both walls and floors.

No Turkish home would be complete without a luxurious and colourful Kilim rug that features a woven tapestry design of geometric shapes and often include tasselled edges or distinctive border patterns. These rugs will look fabulous in the centre of the room for a zoned area of visual colour that can be co-ordinated or clashed with your interior decor. Turkish rugs tend to feature warm yet muted colour tones such as sumptuous orange, mustard yellow, deep blue and green. These multifunctional rugs can also be used as throws to create texture and visual appeal to a plain sofa or bed set.

Cushions are a great way of creating a sense of cosiness and warmth in any home interior and with the rich array of colours and patterns in Turkish interior design you will be spoilt for choice when selecting designs for your home. Many people choose to co-ordinate their cushions with their rugs so Turkish homes will often feature cushion covers that are made from Kilim rugs or Persian designs that are subtle in tone but extremely detailed in pattern. These can be paired with neutral, plain linen cushions or alternatively adopt a more Turkish/Moroccan look with bright jewelled tones, metallic accents and varying satin, cotton and woollen materials.

Lanterns are a must have item in any Turkish interior and will create a fabulous ambient light that compliments the sumptuous, cosy tones of the warm climates. A selection of varying lantern sizes can be hung in grouped pendulum styles in the centre of the ceiling for a unique and eye-catching design that looks particularly striking above a dining table or bed frame. Lanterns are usually crafted from pewter, brass or copper and are shaped in simple lozenge, oval or hexagonal designs.  The filigree design of the lanterns are often left open for optimum lighting or can be inlaid with clear, frosted or bright, mosaic style glass for a colourful spectrum of light.

When selecting furniture for a Turkish inspired home then select statement items with unique shapes and finishes that will create a focal point in your chosen room. Dark hardwood items crafted from walnut or mahogany will perfectly compliment the warm orange and yellow tones of Turkish fabrics and often feature curvaceous arched plinth tops and panels for added detail and authenticity. If you have opted for classic blue and white tiled flooring then these items can be painted in a rich white paint finish for a light and bright appearance. Many items feature filigree effect carvings and doors with items such as dining tables and side tables being decorated with mosaic tiles to create a zoned area of colour and pattern.
