5 New Years Resolutions For Your Home

Forget about the faddy New Year’s resolutions that none of us keep for more than a week! This year try making some New Year’s resolutions for your home interior and create a more exciting and comfortable home environment that will last all year and more. Whether you’re moving home and looking for style inspiration or are living among decor that hasn’t changed for the last 5 years or more, you can inject some colour and visual beauty to your home and try out some new styles that you have never been brave enough to embrace.

Resolution 1 – Be more adventurous with colour

Are you stuck in a rut with your interior colour scheme? Is every room in your home painted in simple magnolia, or plain white? Well now is the time to leave behind the mundane and adopt some colourful accent colours in your home that will completely transform the overall ambiance of your interior spaces. If you are really frightened of colour then try selecting dusky, neutral or earthen tones such as pastel blues and duck egg, taupe or mocha and try them out with a selection of cushions and throws before you jump in and paint any walls. If you are happy with your choice then use the colour on a feature wall or an alcove area to create a zoned area of tonal colour that will compliment your current neutral finishes. For a more drastic change then opt for a bold red, burnt orange or monochrome colour change that will create a rich and elegant backdrop in any room of the home.

Resolution 2 – Furniture overhaul

RS-bed-Rustic-oak-bed-main-room-shotTake a long hard look around your home, are there any furniture items, seating areas or beds that are looking tired and old and not particularly appealing? We all grow attached to certain items of furniture in the home, maybe the sofa is the first item you bought as a couple, or the sideboard was the first thing you bought with your first pay check? Sentimentally in the home is the biggest cause of hanging on to furniture that has seen its last legs or we simply no longer need or. This year choose at least one item of old furniture in your home and aim to change it before the year is out as this allows you to have time to save up your well earned pennies. Update an old sofa with a new design, change your mismatched collections to a matching set or ditch that creaky bed and mattress for a luxury and elegant design. If you really are on a budget then you can still give your current items a face lift using some clever up-cycling techniques such as painting, distressing or decoupage.

Resolution 3 – Kitchen face lift

Kitchen refits can be extremely expensive and are something that the majority of people only consider at least every 10 years, but you can very easily change the look of your kitchen space with a fresh set of appliances and accessories that will add a splash of colour and style to your home. There is such a vast range of fun and funky coloured appliances on the high street this season that you are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing your colour scheme. With the upcoming January sales you will be sure to find some bargains on offer. Bold contemporary colours such as red, lime green and black look great in modern high gloss kitchens and classic country cream and duck egg will create a shabby chic feel in more rustic kitchen designs. Don’t forget to update your tea towels, oven gloves and crockery to create a complimentary and co-ordinating finish.

Resolution 4 – Storage solutions

If you have young children or very generous family and friends you will be familiar with the feeling of ‘Where am I going to put all this?’ that comes in the aftermath of the Christmas period. If you’re anything like me you have a pile of gift sets, socks and perfume in the corner of the bedroom until Easter and no idea where you are going to find the space to accommodate it all. This year why not make it your resolution to create more storage space in your home so you can create a neat and uncluttered interior in which to relax as well as providing areas for any Christmas gifts and toys that you received. For children’s rooms you can purchase a selection of large and small plastic stackable boxes so you can sort their toys into specific ‘themed’ storage areas that will make it easy for them to find what they are looking for (and to tidy it away). If you would prefer a more stylish furniture storage area then a large sideboard, ottoman or chest of drawers will provide a multitude of storage areas for both large and small household items.

Resolution 5 – Don’t ignore odd jobs!

Let’s be honest we all have those little unfinished jobs and annoying DIY tasks that we keep putting off until they are forgotten about, so why not make it your mission this year to get them all wrapped up and sorted so they never have to be thought about again! Stick on that wobbly skirting board, re-silicone your bath and fill in that hole where you moved your mirror 3 years ago. They may seem like boring and insignificant jobs but you will be surprised at how much they annoy you and how much they can actually affect the look and feel of your interior space. Go around your entire home and make a list of all the little jobs that need finishing and then work your way through the list at your own pace starting with the easiest and cheapest jobs first. This will allow you to save any additional funds you may need to put things right or to find a professional or expert if the job requires any outside help.

Good luck and Happy New Year!
