The Perfect Winter Fabrics

While it may be nice to look at the cold and frosty weather through the window on a bright winter’s day, it is not so fun to be shivering in the comfort of your home. Fabrics play a huge role in creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere during the winter season and with a wide variety of materials and styles to choose from there is no excuse for your home to look drab or feel chilly this December. I have selected four of winter’s most favoured fabrics that are sure to create a snug and homely feel in any room of the home.

Furs
Faux fur comes in a wide array of colours and textures and is a winter favourite in high street stores year after year. A layered area of faux fur cushions will create a visual focal point on a sofa or bed and create a stylish and tactile space in which to curl up and relax. These can be paired with a large faux fur rug that will look fabulous beside a roaring open fireplace to create luxurious warmth within the room. For added cosiness include a matching throw that can be draped on a sofa for a practical and stylish look or placed along the foot of the bed for a chic and glamorous finish. Opt for crisp white and grey furs for a Nordic, cabin inspired look or opt for rich cream and fox colours for a cosy, woodland style ambiance

Felt
Felt is a simple yet stylish fabric with a warming texture that is perfect for the winter months. For strong visual texture then display some felt cushions on a plain leather or fabric sofa featuring 3D style patterns that will create a focal point in the room. Opt for crisp white, grey and ice blue for a frosted look that creates a light and bright ambiance in the room. For a more classic look then display red and white felt cushions with Nordic style snowflake, reindeer and tree print designs for a charming festive feel. Felt also makes a strong and stylish fabric for the accessories in your home. Felt storage baskets will make a great feature grouped in the corner of the room, next to the fire or bedside and can be filled with magazines, logs or pine cones for an elegant winter look.

Tartan
Tartan and plaid are a traditional choice for winter homes as they instinctively create a cosy and homely feel in your chosen room. A large set of tartan curtains will look great hung in long swathes across a bedroom or living room window and will make a fabulous alternative to a wallpapered feature wall. A scattering of plaid cushions along a brown, black or cream sofa will provide a textural and striking focal point whilst creating a country cottage ambiance that is perfect for the winter season. Opt for classic cream, red and orange tartans for a sumptuous highland inspired design or for a more modern take on this look, choose white, grey and duck egg blue plaid that will create an arctic inspired look that is refined and sophisticated.

Knitted

Knitted fabrics have been one of the biggest trends of 2016 and are a great way of creating texture and colour in a neutral interior space. For a classic yet modern focal point in your living room area then why not add a large knitted pouffe in cool grey, white or red that will provide a practical foot rest as well as a stylish and textural centrepiece. Team this with co-ordinating knitted cushions in the same winter colour schemes featuring traditional shapes and patterns or funky pom poms that will add texture to any seating area or bed. To create a cosy corner in which to read your favourite book, upholster a classic or modern armchair in a knitted woollen fabric for an inviting space that will create a rural cottage feel. Complete this look with some woodland animal cushions for a fun and on trend design.
