Modern Vs Traditional Christmas

Christmas is nearly upon us and by now many of us will already have put up, or are planning on putting up our tree and decorations. One important decision to make when selecting your festive decorations is what style you are going to opt for and more often than not it comes down to one simple choice…Modern or Traditional? Will you opt for classic patterns and ornaments or more fun and contemporary designs…let us help you decide!

Tree

The first item of Christmas decor to go up in my house is the Christmas tree, it is a statement item that will create a focal point in your festive interior and with such a wide selection of designs and decorations available you will be spoilt for choice. If you love traditional and cosy Christmas tree designs then opt for a classic green pine tree or an artificial version with added berries or snow effect branches that will create a warm and cosy ambiance in your home. Decorate with traditional glass baubles, led candles, birds, angels and holly and stick to classic colour schemes such as red and gold.

For a more contemporary Christmas tree design then select a sleek black or bright white Christmas tree in a slim and elongated style. Choose decorations in bold and vibrant colours or simple monochrome and silver and include modern ornaments such as personalised baubles, butterflies, hearts and feathers for a chic and glamorous look.

Wreaths

Christmas wreaths are a classic decoration for a festive interior and placed on a front door or an internal door they make a fabulous welcome for any friends and family. Their simple circular design has remained the same for centuries but their design and decor can vary from rustic foliage to luxury embellishment depending on your tastes and style. For a classic and traditional wreath opt for mixed green leaves, heather and holly and adornments such as berries, acorns, mistletoe and red or tartan bows for a typical Christmas appearance.

If you prefer a more modern design then select a circle of baubles in a mixture of vibrant pinks, blues and silvers or select knitted pom poms in Nordic greys and taupe. For a truly angelic and glamorous finish make a wreath from snow white feathers and add accents of silver beads and glitter that will create a shimmering focal point against a dark painted door.

Cushions

Cushions are a great way of adding warmth and cosiness to your festive home interior and look fabulous nestled on a sofa or bed. With a great array of designs available across the high street they are a simple and cost effective way of creating a focal point within your chosen room. If you wish to compliment a traditional home interior then opt for simple, neutral cotton and linen cushions in beige or white and include rich red or gold designs that feature holly, robins, wreaths and baubles.

If you prefer a more modern interior look then choose more bold and colourful designs or simple black and white with glittering snowflakes, reindeer and bows or opt for fun slogan cushions with quotes such as ‘let it snow’, ‘ho ho ho’ and ‘deck the halls’ that will look great in more sleek and minimal home interiors.

Stockings

Whether you are 5 or 105 we all get that excited feeling of hanging up our stocking above the fireplace. Not only to they make a fabulous focal point within the room but they provide a practical space for those all important stocking fillers that provide smiles and laughter on Christmas morning. In traditional home interiors opt for stockings in simple red and white or white and gold and select classic materials such as felt and wool with fairisle, holly or sleigh prints. For a truly rustic and cosy design then select traditional tartan and plaid patterns with a faux fur trim that will look great above an open fire or log burner.

For a more contemporary design then select bright and bold colour schemes or sleek monochrome and opt for simple spots, stripes or snowflake patterns with sequin and metallic embellishments. For a feminine finish display a glittered stocking in sleek silver or pink and for a masculine twist select a tweed style design with button detailing.
