Modern Cottages

Autumn has well and truly arrived here in the UK and as the colder weather sets in there is nothing more appealing than a warm and cosy interior to snuggle up in. This season’s hottest trend is the MODERN COTTAGE that brings together all the elements of a traditional rustic retreat and adds a twist of contemporary decor and accessories to create a cosy and sophisticated interior design.

Opt for rustic yet modern colour palettes that will create a bright and welcoming ambiance within your chosen room. A crisp white or grey interior can be accented with pops of vintage colours such as duck egg blue, mustard and maroon to create a sleek and modern feel with hints of classic cosiness. Why not partner classic cream and beige with rich chocolate brown and mocha hues to create a relaxed and refined feel within your chosen room.  Draw attention to a large feature wall with a simple and sleek striped wallpaper or opt for a colourful or neutral tartan or gingham print design for added visual detail that perfectly marries modern and traditional design. Floral prints always work well in a cottage themed room but opt for bolder and less traditional styles in bright colours or monochrome palettes for a more contemporary interior feel.

Opt for a combination of modern and traditional soft furnishings that will look wonderful in any room of the home. Plain cotton or linen curtains can be combined with a traditional soft upholstered sofa in a modern striped or spotted fabric. Alternatively why not give classic oak dining chairs a new lease of life with some bold floral fabric to create an eye catching dining room interior. Sleek leather also works well in a modern cottage interior. Opt for soft cream or white for a bright and uplifting feel or chocolate, tan or black for a more masculine and contemporary feel.  Add a mix and match of cushions to your sleeping or seating areas, including plaid, striped, floral, velvet and faux fur cushions for added warmth and luxurious glamour in your chosen room.

Chunky oak furniture will look wonderful in both modern and traditional cottage interiors however for a truly contemporary twist, why not opt for smoked oak instead of golden oak that will look particularly striking in monochrome and grey cottage interiors. White and cream painted furniture will also look fabulous against the rich and cosy country backdrop and you can add some modern chrome or brushed steel handles for a perfect blend of classic and contemporary style. Grey painted furniture will create warmth and texture in a neutral interior space and will look fabulous with a wide variety of interior colour schemes. Add modern industrial and metal accessories such as chrome kitchenware, copper lighting, photo frames and ornaments and mix and match traditional woven and wicker baskets with brushed metal bins, magazine racks and appliances for a perfect blend of old and new.
