How to Start Collecting Ornaments

For me, the finishing touch of any home is the little trinkets and treasures that have meaning for us or represent our family or our personal style. This ‘how to’ guide will give you some tips and ideas on how to start your very own ornament collection and how to best arrange and display them within your chosen room. Your ornaments don’t have to be from expensive or well known collections (although its fine if they are!), they can be simple and fairly priced items that will create a visual focal point within your home.

  1. Get Travelling!

If you love visiting new places and seeing a variety of destinations, then why not use this opportunity to start a collection of ornaments that are based on your travels? Try and pick up unique pieces from each place you visit, maybe some artisan or homemade items from pottery shops or museums or items designed by local artists. These can be selected from different countries around the world, different regions of the same country or simply taken from different UK destinations that you may visit on holiday or day trips.

  1. Keep it in the Family

If you have ever inherited some ornaments from other family members, then you will probably be like 90% of the population and stick it in the back of the drawer or take it to the local charity shop but if it is a piece that you like then why not use it to kickstart a collection of your own? Hunt down other pieces from the collection in shops, antique stores or even online and create a showcase of items that can be displayed in a stylish display cabinet. Collecting the same style of ornaments as your other family members can also allow you to amass a much larger collection, with each person collecting different pieces.

  1. Contemporary collections

If old fashioned ornaments are totally not your style then a new wave of collectable items are currently taking the world by storm – Funko Pop Vinyls! These fun little character figures come in a vast range of designs from your favourite movies, comics and TV shows and are a great way to add some modern fun into your home interior. They are also the perfect way to get your little ones started with their collecting and can be displayed on some floating shelving in their bedroom interiors

  1. Simple and Easy

If you don’t have a particular style or taste in ornaments then it can be difficult to even think of a way in which to start a collection. If this is the case then keep it simple! Choose some ornaments that are in keeping with the colour scheme of your chosen room and display in a grouped formation on a sideboard or windowsill area. Alternatively why not compliment the theme of your room such as French style ornaments, farmhouse plates, Nordic sculptures or tropical themed ornaments that will tie together the look of your room.
