How to Create a Space Themed Bedroom
This week we are taking a look at a bedroom theme that is out of this world and perfect for any budding astronomer or astronaut….SPACE! The fascination with outer space has been something that has captured children’s and adult’s hearts for centuries. With a few simply design techniques and accessories you can transform even the plainest of bedroom interiors into a cosmic haven that is full of fun and intricate detailing.
Creating a space themed backdrop is a crucial part of your design process. Firstly select a colour scheme that reflects the deep darkness of outer space such as navy, midnight blue, black, white and silver. Then select a star or planet print wallpaper or an eye-catching wall mural that features a view of the galaxies and planets or an outline of the constellations for added educational detailing. You can also select rocket, asteroid and star shaped stickers with glow in the dark details that are perfect for adding illumination as you drop off to sleep. You can also create a star studded ceiling by using a rich navy paint and splatters or white and glow in the dark paint to give a cosmic and sparkling appearance.
Select bedding sets that features a classic moon shaped pattern, stars or even a star wars design (for the bigger kids among us). Alternatively select a bed spread that features a swirling and colourful galaxy design (right), planetary arrangement or a constellation print that adds a visual detail that is perfect for teenagers or older children. For all of the budding astronauts among us then select a plain black or crisp white bedding set featuring a space suit design or a NASA logo that will look great with rocket print sheets and pillow cases.
Lighting is the perfect way to create a space like ambiance in your bedroom and there are vast arrays of styles that will create a focal point within your room. A simple rocket shaped lamp will look great positioned on a bedside or desk or alternatively select a moon design, orb lamp that will cast crater like shadows around your interior space. Create visual impact with a central ceiling light in a space ship design or a group of planet lamp shades in varying designs and colours. Alternatively select star shaped droplet lights that can be hung as a group in the centre of the room or hung individually at intervals for a scattered starlit design.
Choose or create space inspired furniture items that are perfect for any cosmic explorer. Silver painted or chrome metal furniture will give a modern space age feel to your interior space and select items such as bookcases and chests in circular or rocket shapes for added detail. If you are feeling artistic then update your old furniture with a coat of rich blue or black paint and planet or star shaped stencils or space wallpaper decoupage. Industrial style furniture or plain white gloss furniture will give a sleek and contemporary finish that can be accentuated by adding a NASA logo stencil to the outer panels.
To add the finishing touch to your space themed bedroom select statement accessories that will complete your cosmic decor. Add a selection of planet and star print cushions to your bed and add a rocket or moon shaped rug in the centre of the room or a simple black rug with white constellation patterns. For any astronomers out there display a vintage telescope in the corner of the room or pick up a small space projector that will project galaxy and star imagery around the room and makes a great nightlight for younger children.
