How to Create a Ranch Style Interior

It’s time to grab your lasso and put on your favourite cowboy hat as we take a look at traditional and cosy RANCH style interiors that will add some classic western charm to any room of the home. From rich earthen colour schemes to natural accessories and hides; ranch interiors have a distinctive yet simple design that is perfect for rustic or country home interiors.

Ranch style interiors are all about wood and natural materials that can be sourced from the surrounding landscape. Wooden cladding should be left rough and textural instead of sanded and smooth. Select solid stone or wood flooring with a distinctive grain and stain in a deep golden tone that will compliment the sandy exterior land.  Where possible leave any ceiling beams exposed or add some fake beams to a large create a cosy feel in a sparse interior space. You can also include elements of natural stone on your fireplace or alcoves in either caramel coloured sandstone or deep grey slate for a rich array of natural materials.

When selecting colours for your ranch inspired home opt for classic neutral tones such as beige and cream and add some sandy desert colours like terracotta, chocolate and caramel for a rich and cosy ambiance. If you prefer a slightly lighter interior feel then you can also add deep blue and charcoal tones with hints of dove grey and white that gives a more modern take on the traditional ranch design. Bold Mexican accent colours also work well in this setting with purple, blue and red providing a complimentary yet contrasting texture against the natural wooden backdrop of the home.

Fabrics and upholstery should be kept as natural as possible with simple cottons, linens, furs and hides. Upholster any sofas, chairs and stool in deep chocolate leather or cosy brown suede for a stylish and rustic interior look. Seating areas can be accentuated with textural cow hide cushions or soft suede with classic western tassels and tacks or for a pop of colour throw in some Aztec print cushions, throws and rugs with a dash of blue and red. Curtains in plain beige linen work well against the earthen colours of the backdrop and can be tied back using rustic wooden hold backs or thick horse reins for a quirky and unique finish.

Accessories will add the finishing touch to any room of the home and create an authentic western style ambiance in your interior setting. No ranch interior would be complete without a set of deer heads or antlers mounted to a statement feature wall. Natural off white or polished wooden antlers look great against a solid stone wall or a set of modern chrome antlers can be used to add a contrasting finish against a rustic wooden wall. Add ornaments and wall art that feature sheriffs star emblems, old tin pots and candle holders, horseshoes and add a few cacti in large pots in the corner of the room.

Furniture should look natural and rustic with a finish that makes it look like it has been well loved over many years of use. Select rough sawn tables with solid trunk bases and rustic dressers and bed frames that provide a cosy and welcoming look. If you prefer a more farming inspired design then select industrial style furniture items that blend natural wood and metal with rivet style attachments. Where possible try your hand at up-cycling old items such as crates and palettes to make shelving and seating within your home.
