Selecting Artwork for Your Home

Choosing artwork for our homes can be a very confusing task. Do you opt for modern or abstract canvases and prints or stick with traditional landscapes and portraits? Artwork plays a crucial part in creating a focal point in our chosen interior spaces so it is important to ensure that the chosen piece not only suits our home but our personality and tastes (after all you are the one who is going to have to look at it every day!). With that in mind I have put together a guide to 5 of the most popular art styles to help you decide the right choice for you.

Landscapes
Landscape pictures come in a wide range of styles and sizes and can be used to create a calming ambiance or the illusion of a beautiful view in rooms with small windows or a limited outlook. For a modern landscape artwork then opt for a triptych (set of three) pictures featuring a snowy alpine forest, golden trees, a sunshiny meadow or a beach for a replication of the seasons that can be interchanged across the months. A more classic look can be achieved by opting for oil or watercolour paintings of an orchard, farm or cityscape that features deep and rich colours that will look great on a central fireplace wall.

Portraits
Portraits have long been a favoured choice of artwork in wealthy and royal families. A gallery of portraits will look great lining a staircase, grouped on a feature wall or placed in a prime position on a chimney breast or alcove. For a traditional Victorian style look then display oil portraits of your family members in period style clothing that will look great in classic home interiors. Display in carved mahogany or gilded gold frames for added visual impact. If you prefer a more modern look then opt for bold pop art style portraits in neon and bubblegum colour palettes and display in a sleek white minimal room for a burst of colour and detail.

Photography
Photographs are a great way to include artwork in your home and are a cheaper alternative to more costly paintings and prints. Black and white or sepia prints give a more professional finish to your photographs, particularly in portrait or cityscape shots. For a striking focal point on your chosen feature wall display a gallery of photos in a mix and match of sizes, finishes and shapes of frame that gives a quirky vintage look in any style of home. If you prefer a more crisp and sleek design then get your chosen photograph printed onto a single or series of canvases that can be hung in prime position in your home.

Abstract
Many people avoid abstract artwork as they worry that the bold appearance may overpower their interior space however a single statement abstract piece can transform the entire look of your chosen room. Bright and colourful artworks are a great way of injecting detail into a plain white room or updating a dark painted feature wall. Opt for slashes, splashes or geometric shapes in a plethora of colourful shades. For added detail and variation, choose a sculptural, 3D abstract artwork that features a raised surface area and textures to create a visual focal point in the centre of a plain feature wall.

Typography
Slogan and typographical artwork has been a huge trend throughout 2016 and the fun statement phrases and words are a fun way of including a feature artwork in your selected interior space. Box lights are a fun and functional way of creating an artistic focal point along a mantelpiece or sideboard area and can be used to spell out the family’s initials or words such as ‘love’ and ‘home’ for a timeless visual look. Slogan wall art canvases, neon lights and framed quotes also look fabulous hung in single or group formation on a feature wall and can be co-ordinated to your interior colour scheme for a chic designer finish.
