How to Create a Sleeping Beauty Inspired Home

Far from sending us off into a deep sleep ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is a Disney tale that features all of the elements required for a classically magical fairytale. From grand castles to one of the most evil villains in Disney history, this story is loved by viewers of all ages. The balance of cosy country settings and regal and stately backdrops can be easily adopted into a wide range of home interiors and with a sprinkling of magic can transform your home into an elegant and stylish space fit for a Princess or a deep and glamorous setting to celebrate your inner Evil Fairy.

Princess Aurora

The spinning wheel is an integral part of the story and is a key element in a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ inspired home. The evil fairy Maleficent curses Aurora to die on her 16th birthday by pricking her finger on a spinning wheel but a good fairy named Merryweather alters the curse so that instead of dying, the spinning wheel will send Aurora into a deep sleep.

Classic spinning wheels can be found in antique stores and auctions and make a fabulous focal point in a nursery or living room area, or if you have limited space, select wheel shaped wall art, ornaments and table decorations that will bring this crucial part of the story to life.

Flaura, Flora and Merryweather take Aurora into the woods to try and keep her safe from harm and change her name to ‘Briar Rose’ to prevent her from being found. You can recreate a cosy country cottage look with a selection of warm cream and pastel tones and natural wood furniture that will create a feminine yet rustic home interior. Choose fabrics such as lace and linen that feature traditional embroidery for added visual detail.

You can also pay homage to the Princess’s new name with some classic rose print bedding or a set of statement curtains that will add a hint of colour to an otherwise neutral space.

When the inevitable happens and the curse comes true, Aurora is placed in a bed in the highest tower of the castle to wait until ‘True Loves Kiss’ can break her from her sleep. In contrast to the quaint and cosy cottage interior why not create a grand and regal bed space that is dramatic and eye-catching.

Choose bed sets with satin accents or flocked baroque style patterns in rich red, purple and gold. Add a classic fairytale canopy to your bed frame with heavy velvet or light voile fabric and an ornate bed crown. To celebrate the moment when Prince Phillip finally awakes her with a kiss, add a wall decal or framed picture featuring the lyrics of the famous song ‘Once upon a Dream’ to complete this romantic Disney look.

Maleficent

The Evil Fairy is a much loved Disney villainess and her dark yet opulent demeanour can be translated into your home interior with a variety of decadent home decor ideas and accessories. One of the best ways to create drama and colour in an interior is with a bold statement wallpaper that can be used to accent a feature wall or alcove area. Graham and Brown have created these fabulous Disney wallpapers (Left) that feature a deep metallic grey backdrop with a recurring image of Maleficent in a black flocked finish.

This luxurious wallpaper will look fabulous behind a heavy carved black painted French bed or a silver bed frame for added visual style. This wallpaper also comes in a design that features Maleficent’s Raven that is sleek and stylish and would make a great feature in a gothic style home interior. Its dark colour scheme means that it gives a perfect blend of masculine and feminine style.

I absolutely love these cushions that feature silhouettes of Princess Aurora and Maleficent. The simple design is chic and eye-catching and will look great in both sleeping and seating areas. The crisp monochrome colour scheme can be partnered with both bold and minimal interior decors and soft furnishings. Place these cushions at opposite ends of a sofa for maximum impact or place along a chaise lounge or side by side on a bed to pay further homage to the Sleeping Beauty story. Partner with black satin cushions for added drama or cosy rose print designs for a classic feminine finish.
