How to Create a Festive Feel in Your Home Interior

It’s that time of year again where we pull down the Christmas decorations from the attic and dig out the tree from the garage. Decorating our homes for Christmas can be an arduous task but for others (like me) it’s a time to unleash our inner interior designer and create a home that is full of festive cheer.

While we all concentrate on creating the perfect Christmas tree that is shimmering and glistening in the corner of the room, we often forget to add some sparkle and classic Yuletide charm to the rest of our home interior. With that in mind let’s take a look at 5 ways you can create a festive and fashionable ambiance in your home this Christmas.

Hang Up Your Stockings

For me no Christmas fireplace is complete without a selection of stockings for a traditional Christmas look. Hang up your chosen stockings in a regimental line along the edge of your mantelpiece in a selection of matching or contrasting colours. If you are going for a classic period look this Christmas then opt for traditional red and green velvet or felt stockings that are edged with a band of faux fur and decorated with some metallic Victorian style motifs. For a more contemporary and chic festive interior then you can select some glittering and glistening stockings in silver, black or gold for a sophisticated and opulent finish.

Snuggle Up and Get Cosy

There is nothing more satisfying than coming home after a long day of Christmas shopping and putting your feet up with a nice warm cup of tea. Creating warmth and cosiness in the winter months is easy with a selection of fabulous Christmas cushions that can be displayed on your sofa or bed for added texture and colour.

For classic warming colour tones then select bold red cushions with festive snowflakes, reindeers or robins that will provide a traditional nod to the Christmas period. Contemporary slogan cushions look fabulous in minimal home interiors; opt for phrases such as ‘Ho Ho Ho’, ‘Noel’ and ‘Jingle bells’ for a fun and funky splash of Christmas cheer. For a more subtle print or pattern that can be displayed all through the autumn and winter months then select a range of Tartan, Fair Isle or faux fur cushions in your chosen Christmas colour scheme.

Deck the Halls

Garlands are great for creating colour and warmth in a neutral interior space and bring a sense of the crisp wintery landscape into the home. Classic garlands of green foliage and poinsettia look wonderfully rich and eye-catching woven through an open staircase or draped along the mantelpiece in the centre of your home. Garlands can be accentuated with some white or coloured sparkling fairy lights to create added visual elegance that will light up your home on the dark winter nights. For a more contemporary look then select gold and silver metallic garlands with glittered acorns, holly and leaves or garlands in bold and vibrant colour schemes that look great in glamorous interior spaces. As an alternative to a garland you can style a shabby chic Christmas interior with a stylish display of Christmas bunting in plain and patterned prints and colours.

Winter Wreathes

Hanging up a Wreath on the front door of your home is a Christmas tradition that stems back as far as the druids. The Romans would exchange holly wreathes as gifts and with the rise of Christianity they soon became popular as holiday decorations. Traditional wreathes are typically made from, holly, mistletoe and foliage and are decorated with simple ribbons for a classically charming look. More modern alternatives can be crafted from colourful baubles, balls of wool, tinsel or painted woven willow for a more vintage shabby chic look. As well as decorating your front door you can hang wreathes on your internal doors or in the centre of the fireplace for a festive visual focal point. Advent wreathes are also a great way of adding a splash of Christmas traditional to your interior; led flat as a table centrepiece, 5 candles should be placed in the centre and one lit per week as a countdown to Christmas day.

What’s behind the window?

Last but not least; December would not be complete without a fun and festive advent calendar that will provide smiles and cheer to children and adults alike. With such a fabulous range of advent calendars available on the high street as well as simple homemade designs; you can adopt this Christmas tradition into a wide range of festive interiors. Of course the majority of children would like nothing more than a yummy chocolate calendar but why not try an alternative with a Victorian style advent calendar that features numbered drawers in which you can add your own surprises for every day of advent. You can use a mixture of sweets, small toys or gadgets (for dads) that will keep the little ones amused and will leave them guessing what the next drawer will reveal. For a more contemporary advent countdown then check out some of the fabulous beauty calendars that have been released this month from fabulous nail varnishes to luxury make-up brands. There is no excuse to leave anyone out of the fun this December.
