How to Create a Cosy Home Interior

It’s that time of year again when the dark nights start to draw in and the weather becomes increasingly chillier. But fear not, while it may be cold and crisp outside a cosy interior space can provide with you with warmth and comfort as well as a stylish look that carry you right through the autumn/winter season. Using a selection of rich textiles, ambient lighting and tonal colours you can create a relaxing space in which to curl up with a nice cup of tea or a delicious mulled wine.

Avoid cold or stark colour schemes at this time of year as they can create bleak atmosphere in your chosen room. Instead opt for rich neutral colours such as cream, beige and taupe or opt for tonal greys, dove white and pewter for a snug interior with only hints of icy winter hues. Add pops of deeper colours for a more country inspired design with deep autumnal shades of russet and crimson or berry tones such as purple and maroon that will create an enveloping swathe of colour that can be used on walls, floors and furnishings.

Greens and blues can also work in a cosy home interior but avoid stark primary colours and instead opt for chalkier tones such as duck egg and fern green that will compliment the cosier neutral hues.

Tartan and plaid textiles and fabrics work really well on cushions and curtains and can be displayed in traditional cream and red for a highland style look or light grey and pewter for an elegant Scandinavian design. Add a scattering of faux fur cushions and a faux fur throw to a seating area or bed to create a rustic, log cabin style environment. Faux fur can also make a fabulous material for a large rug that will look fabulous in front of a warm open fire or log burner to create a classic rural home design. If you prefer a more retro style home then a rich shag pile rug or carpet will give a cosy and functional feature to your room that is textural and eye-catching.

Thick knitted cushions and pouffes are readily available on the high street this autumn and provide a warm and rich texture focal point in a living room interior. You can also create your own knitted cushions by recycling your old sweaters and cardigans and using them to create new covers that will give a new lease of life to your existing scatter cushions.

Wood is a great way of adding a sense of warmth and cosiness to your interior space and can be displayed in its natural state for a rich and sumptuous colour and texture that can be used across your walls, floor and furniture. For a more Nordic style approach then paint your wooden cladding, flooring and furniture items in a gorgeous anthracite grey that is cosy yet illuminating or white wash for a shabby chic style design that creates a classic country cottage feel that works really well in living room and bedroom areas.

Solid oak furniture is perfect for creating a cosy setting in your home and a large carved sleigh style bed frame will create a perfect bedroom space where you can curl up and enjoy a relaxing night’s sleep.

Lighting is key in creating the perfect cosy home interior as stark and modern light fixtures can often be too bright and will not compliment the rich and enveloping nature of your decor. Opt for small table lamps with muted orange bulbs and select tartan lampshades or linen style designs that are subtle yet illuminating. For a more eye-catching design then select an antler style ceiling light that will create a cabin style feel that is stylish and cosy.

Candles are a great way of creating the ambient light in the colder months and fabulous storm lanterns provide a great focal point on a mantelpiece, side table or sideboard. If you have children then there are fabulous selections of LED candles that flicker like a real flame and provide a safe yet stylish feature within your home.
