Colour Blocking

COLOUR BLOCKING is set to be a huge trend this summer season and it is easy to see why this look is perfect for creating a bold designer look within the home. By creating zoned areas of clashing or complementary colours within the room you can create a striking focal point that has a hint of retro 1980s charm. This look can be used with a wide variety of colour schemes to create maximum impact in your home

Walls are a perfect canvas for colour blocking as they can be painted or wallpapered to create shapes and contours within the room. For a bold and retro style then paint alternating walls in different primary or neon tones or use masking tape to create square or triangular areas of blocked colour on a main feature wall.

This look also works well with blocked areas of pastel hues for a more subtle feel or areas of bright and dark colours for a more modern design. You can also select some bold and eye-catching geometric print wallpaper to create a statement feature wall with clashing or co-ordinating shapes and colours.

Bold fabrics are a great way of introducing colour blocking into your home without the need for a complete redecoration.

Choose block-coloured curtains that stand out against your chosen colour scheme or wallpaper design or opt for a bold geometric patterned rug that will look great against a plain carpet or wooden floor. If you are looking to update a plain upholstered or leather seating area then select plain cushions in a varying array of colours that can be used to create a focal point within the room. Alternatively, select geometric or retro patterned cushions in white and colour or black and coloured prints for a sleek designer look.

Colour blocking does not have to be reserved for your walls and soft furnishings, painted furniture can also be used to create zoned areas of colour within your chosen space and provides the perfect canvas to have fun with clashing colours and designs. Why not opt for a large open front oak bookcase and paint different shelves with a block colour that stands out against the main body of paintwork. Alternatively, why not create visual detail with your dining chairs and table by painting each chair in varying bold or pastel tones that will clash against a white or black painted dining table.

You can also use lighting and accessories to colour block your home interior. A statement floor lamp with a bold coloured shade will look great positioned alongside an alternative coloured wall, sofa or painted bedside table, and can be further clashed with a coloured pendulum ceiling light and table lamp for added contrast. Wall mirrors, picture frames and vases are simple items that can be used to create pops of colour along a feature wall or mantelpiece and will create blocks of colour against a neutral or bold painted wall.
