The making of our Barcelona chair and ottoman

The history behind the famous Barcelona chair

This truly amazing chair was designed by a gentleman called Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, 27^th March 1886 ~ 17^th August 1969. He was born in Aachen, Germany in 1886 at which point no-one could have possibly known what a difference Mies van der Rohe's work was going to make. Mies van der Rohe was first and foremost a visionary architect who had no formal architect training but was taken on as an apprentice in the office of furniture designer, Bruno Paul. He then went from strength to strength and some years later took on the influential role of Director of Architecture at the Bauhaus Design School and with assistance founded the Architectural Association, Der Ring. He was the creator of the world famous Knoll Barcelona chair. Amongst many of Mies van der Rohe's other works of art he also designed the German Pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona, this was one of his finest pieces of architecture, pushing the boundaries of modern design. Mies, pioneered to create a new architectural style after the First World War. He longed for a style to represent modern times as such trends and eras had before.
